SmartPoint - Frequently Asked Questions

Have Question? We are here to help

What is the capacity of SmartPoint

SmartPoint operates on a standard 240 volt, 10 amp circuit, providing up to 2.4 kilowatts of power. It is compatible with any device that uses a standard Australian 10 amp plug, including most portable EV chargers. You can expect to get between 10 and 20 kilometres of range per hour using a 10 amp charger, depending on your vehicle.

Is there a 15amp SmartPoint Socket?

SmartPoint is designed to handle up to 16 amps, but we have chosen to limit it to 10 amps for safety, billing accuracy, and to meet upcoming compliance requirements.

From April 2026, all new EV charging hardware in Australia that charges by kilowatt hour (kWh) must use an NMI-certified meter. These meters are complex and costly, and currently there are no NMI-certified meters with the IoT features needed for pay per use charging in small format chargers like SmartPoint. We are actively working on solutions for this.

There is also an exemption for time-based billing. When charging is billed by time rather than by kWh, the NMI requirement does not apply. Our data shows that most SmartPoint users charge with a 10 amp portable charger. SmartPoint is able to charge users based on time, converting hours plugged in to energy delivered, ensuring a fair and transparent price.

Another important reason is building capacity. When installing SmartPoints throughout a building, limiting each unit to 10 amps allows more residents to access charging before the total electrical capacity is reached. This standardised rate means every user knows they will reliably receive 10 amps, making the system fair and predictable for everyone.

Example:
If you use a 10 amp (2.4 kW) charger for one hour at fifty cents per kWh, you receive 2.4 kWh and your cost is $1.20.
If the socket was rated for 15 amps (3.5 kW), but you still use a 10 amp charger, some systems would charge you as if you received 3.5 kWh in that hour ($1.75), even though you only received 2.4 kWh. This is not fair for the user.

By standardising at 10 amps, SmartPoint keeps billing simple and fair, maintains safety, allows more residents to charge, and meets the needs of nearly all users while staying ahead of regulatory changes.

Do I need WiFi to use Alchemy Charge hardware?

No, WiFi is not always required. Alchemy Charge supports both WiFi and Cellular connectivity across our full range of hardware, including SmartPoint, Level 2 chargers, and Level 3 DC chargers.

If your building has reliable WiFi, you can connect your devices directly. For sites without WiFi, or when installing multiple devices, we recommend using WiFi-enabled chargers with our RapidLink Cellular Modem. This modem, available from our online shop, allows multiple chargers to connect to our network using a single DATA SIM.

A DATA SIM is required for the RapidLink Cellular Modem and for individual Level 2 and Level 3 chargers, with ongoing costs. Plans start from $12 per month, depending on the number of devices connected.

This flexible connectivity ensures that whether you are installing a single charger or managing a complex network of devices, Alchemy Charge can provide a reliable solution for any building.

Can I replace any power point with an Alchemy Charge SmartPoint?

Yes, in most cases any existing power point can be replaced with a SmartPoint. Any licensed electrician can install a SmartPoint because each unit is pre-commissioned and fully tested before it leaves our facility. There is no complex commissioning process and no need for the electrician to learn a new system. Installation can be as simple as replacing or installing a standard power outlet.

However, it is always the responsibility of the electrician to check the existing infrastructure before installation to ensure the wiring, circuit, and setup are safe and suitable for SmartPoint. This ensures a reliable and straightforward upgrade for both residents and buildings.

Are these suitable for AirBNB/Short term rental properties?

Yes, SmartPoints are a fantastic addition to Airbnb and other short term rental properties. They provide guests with a convenient and safe on-site pay per use charging option, while allowing hosts to generate additional revenue from this valuable amenity. As a host, you set the rate you want to charge your guests. Our commission is added on top, so all charging costs are covered by the user. There are no ongoing fees for the host unless you choose to install a 4GX SmartPoint, which requires a monthly SIM subscription.

With SmartPoint, you can list your property as having EV charging facilities, making it more attractive to guests searching for this feature. SmartPoint also includes built in safety features that help protect you, your property, and your guests.

What is the average installation cost?

The average installation cost for a SmartPoint can vary widely depending on the simplicity or complexity of the installation process. Typically, you could expect to pay anywhere between $160 to $500 for installation.

Can we have multiple SmartPoints at one property?

Absolutely, you can install as many SmartPoints as necessary, each operating independently. For instance, if you have multiple parking spots, you can place a SmartPoint at each one and manage them individually for maximum efficiency and control.

As a host can I use the SmartPoint and not pay the commission?

Yes, as a host you are able to log into the dashboard and enable free use mode, once done you can enable billing.

Load Management (Basic Managed Queueing System for SmartPoint)

What is the Load Management system?
SmartPoint features a managed queueing system that prevents overloading by limiting concurrent charging sessions. It prioritises sessions based on the order they start and automatically queues subsequent sessions if the building reaches its capacity limit.

Is there an additional cost for Load Management?
Yes, activating the Load Management system incurs an additional cost. This can be structured as a recurring monthly fee or integrated into the kWh commission on usage. The payment method can be chosen at the time of activation.

When should buildings activate the managed queueing system?
We encourage buildings to activate the managed queueing system when nearing their electrical capacity limits. This helps save money by avoiding unnecessary costs until the system is needed.

How does SmartPoint manage charging in environments with multiple EVs?
In environments like Strata complexes or car parks, SmartPoint ensures the electrical system is not overloaded. For instance, if a complex can support charging 10 vehicles simultaneously but has 15 vehicles needing a charge, SmartPoint will manage the queue. It will charge the first 10 vehicles efficiently and then automatically activate the remaining 5 sessions as earlier sessions end.

Load Management (Advanced Dynamic Load Management for SmartPoint & NCC 2025)

What is Dynamic Load Management?
Dynamic Load Management is a system that monitors and controls the electrical load across large buildings or complexes. SmartPoint can measure up to 400 amps three phase and allows for multiple independent load management systems within any building. This is essential for properties with variable power usage, such as those with elevators or large car park ventilation systems on timers. Dynamic Load Management ensures safe, efficient charging and compliance with regulations such as the upcoming NCC 2025 Draft.

When is Dynamic Load Management needed?
This system is recommended for large or complex buildings where total power usage fluctuates, or where several major systems can affect available capacity. It is ideal for sites with elevators, automated ventilation, or mixed use areas that experience changing demand.

Is there an additional cost for Dynamic Load Management?
Yes, activating Dynamic Load Management may incur an additional cost, either as a monthly service or included as a commission on kWh usage. The payment structure can be selected during activation.
