On Sydney’s northern beaches, three-year-old Alchemy Charge is gearing up for a $10 million capital raise to expand into Indonesia, Greece and the United States in the coming months.
The start-up allows standard power points to be converted into metered EV charging stations using its low-cost ($299) SmartPoint solution. Originally designed for strata buildings, the gadget, which has some nifty software engineering at the back end, is gaining traction with commercial car parks seeking to stop power theft and turn it into a revenue stream, as well as short-stay accommodation.
“We’re going crackers with Airbnbs,” Alchemy Charge chief executive and co-founder Yasemin Selvi says. She says Indonesia represents an “unbelievably exciting opportunity” given the volume. “In the Asian market, it’s a completely different conversation because we’re talking two-wheelers and three-wheelers that can only be charged with a [regular] powerpoint,” Selvi says.
